Platycodon grandiflorus, also known as balloon flower, bellflower, or monk's hat, is a perennial herb with stems 20–120 cm tall, usually hairless, occasionally densely covered with short hairs, unbranched, and rarely branched in the upper part. The leaves are all whorled, partially whorled to entirely alternate, sessile or with very short petioles, ovate, ovate-elliptic to lanceolate in shape. The leaves are ovate or ovate-lanceolate, and the flowers are dark blue or dark purplish-white, making them suitable as ornamental plants; its roots can be used medicinally.
