Physical Properties

Calcium carbonate is a fine white crystalline powder, odorless and tasteless. It exists in both amorphous and crystalline forms. The crystalline form can be further divided into orthorhombic and hexagonal systems (anhydrous calcium carbonate is a colorless orthorhombic crystal, while hexahydrate calcium carbonate is a colorless monoclinic crystal^[3]), appearing as columnar or rhombic shapes with a density of 2.93 g/cm3. Its melting point is 1339°C (it decomposes at 825–896.6°C), and at 10.7 MPa, the melting point is 1289°C. It is almost insoluble in water, dissolves in water containing ammonium salts or ferric oxide, and is insoluble in alcohol.
