Octafluorocyclobutane

Octafluorocyclobutane (C318) is a colorless, odorless, non-flammable gas. It is easily liquefied, with a saturation pressure (S.P.) of 274 kPa at 21.1°C. It is highly stable and does not react with other substances under normal conditions, but decomposes at high temperatures (600°C). Octafluorocyclobutane is a non-toxic gas; however, it should not be exposed to flame temperatures as it may decompose and release toxic substances. It is used as a gaseous insulator, foaming agent, and propellant.

Primarily used as a propellant and refrigerant in the food industry, as an etching agent in integrated circuits, as a dielectric mixed with sulfur hexafluoride, and as a medium in the polymerization of fluorine-containing compounds.
