The half-roof prism (also known as the "roof half-prism") is a type of optical prism and a variant of the roof prism series. Structurally, it resembles a full roof prism but includes only partial reflective surfaces or a simplified design. It is commonly used in specific optical systems to achieve functions such as image inversion and directional deflection.
II. Optical Functions and Working Principle The main functions of the half-roof prism include:
Image inversion: It can reflect the incident image from right to left or top to bottom to achieve image flipping; Light deflection: It can bend and deflect the light path by 90°, making it suitable for optical systems that require altering the direction of light propagation;
Image rotation: In devices such as telescopes and rangefinders, it is used to adjust the orientation of the objective lens imaging, making it upright and readable.
Its working principle is based on the mechanisms of light reflection and total internal reflection. Unlike traditional prisms, roof prisms (including half-roof prisms) are not limited by the critical angle of total internal reflection, allowing them to accept incident light from wider angles, thereby enhancing the flexibility and imaging quality of optical systems;
