| Applications | Propylene glycol is a key raw material for unsaturated polyester, epoxy resins, and polyurethane resins, accounting for about 45% of its total consumption. Such unsaturated polyesters are widely used in surface coatings and reinforced plastics. Due to its viscosity, hygroscopic properties, and non-toxicity, propylene glycol is extensively used as a humectant, antifreeze agent, lubricant, and solvent in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries. In the food industry, propylene glycol reacts with fatty acids to form propylene glycol fatty acid esters, primarily used as food emulsifiers. It is also an excellent solvent for flavorings and pigments. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is commonly used as a solvent, softener, and excipient in various ointments and creams. Because of its good miscibility with various fragrances, it is also used as a solvent and softener in cosmetics. Additionally, propylene glycol serves as a tobacco humectant. |
