It is a common inorganic base with strong alkalinity. A 0.1 mol/L solution has a pH of 13.5. It is soluble in water and ethanol, slightly soluble in ether, and highly hygroscopic, absorbing moisture from the air to deliquesce. It absorbs carbon dioxide to form potassium carbonate.
