Water Droplet Erosion Test

Introduction:

In aerospace and other applications, when water droplets impact high-speed aircraft, the repeated impact on droplet surfaces can be more destructive than solid particle collisions. This is due to high-impact pressures causing shear waves and lateral jetting.

Due to surface irregularities—increasing roughness and pit formation—the repeated impact of water droplets on any component affects its performance efficiency. Aircraft flying in rainy conditions exhibit wear on the leading edges of wings, engines, and rotor blades. In power plants, thinning of steel pipes is attributed to the repeated impact of condensing water droplets. Wear caused by such conditions increases operational and maintenance costs. Studying this process and designing materials and mechanisms with optimized performance can significantly enhance lifespan and efficiency.

For this application, Ducom has specifically developed this tester to simulate the pressure, droplet size, and speed of raindrops, enabling research on erosion in aerospace components and power plant transport systems.
