What to do if the rebar sleeve is rusty

During the construction process, rebar coupling sleeves may rust due to various reasons. If rusty rebar sleeves are driven into concrete, the presence of rust can prevent the sleeves from bonding firmly with the concrete, leading to a decline in engineering quality and affecting the overall project. So, what should be done if the rebar sleeve is rusty?

• If the rebar coupling sleeve screwed onto the rebar is rusty, the only solution is to replace it.
• If the stored rebar sleeve is rusty but not severely, it can be soaked in an emulsified oil aqueous solution with an appropriate amount, and then stored in a dry place.
• If the stored rebar coupling sleeve has large areas of rust, it can be soaked in an oxalic acid solution to remove the rust. However, after derusting with oxalic acid solution, the appearance of the rebar sleeve will turn black, which does not affect its use but is less aesthetically pleasing.
• The rebar sleeve can be soaked in the cutting fluid provided by the manufacturer, and derusted manually with a cleaning ball or with a steel brush on a polishing machine. The former method is labor-intensive and inefficient, while the latter is more dangerous and requires precautions to avoid injury.
• If there is a large quantity of rusty sleeves, they can be returned to the manufacturer to have the outer skin stripped again. The rusty internal threads can be re-tapped on a mandrel tapping machine. The drawback is the high cost, and the outer diameter of the rebar sleeve will become slightly smaller.
