Frame agitators are selected based on the physical properties, capacity, and mixing purpose of different media, playing a significant role in accelerating chemical reaction rates and improving production efficiency. Frame agitators are generally used for mixing paste-like materials.
Frame agitators can be considered a variation of paddle agitators, with a more robust structure and the ability to handle large volumes of material. When the bottom shape of such an agitator resembles the lower head of the reactor, it is commonly referred to as an anchor agitator. Frame agitators have a large diameter, typically 2/3 to 9/10 of the reactor's inner diameter, operating at 50–70 rpm. For low-viscosity liquids, the diameter ratio of the anchor impeller to the tank is 0.7–0.9, while for high-viscosity liquids, it is 0.8–0.95, with speeds usually ranging from 10 to 50 rpm. The small gap between the frame agitator and the tank wall facilitates heat transfer processes. At high speeds, the liquid driven by the agitator blades removes the stagnant layer from the reactor wall; at low speeds, agitators with scrapers provide excellent heat conduction. These agitators are commonly used for heat transfer, crystallization operations, and mixing high-viscosity liquids, high-concentration slurries, and settling slurries.
Anchor and frame agitators belong to the same category, collectively referred to as anchor-frame agitators. To increase the mixing range and remove residues or liquid layers on the tank wall, the outer contour of the anchor-frame agitator closely matches the inner wall of the mixing tank. The bottom shape is adapted to the tank's contour, including elliptical, conical, and other forms. To enhance the mixing range for high-viscosity materials and improve the impeller's rigidity, vertical blades and crossbeams are often added to anchor and frame agitators, resulting in a variety of structural forms for anchor-frame agitators.

IV. Application Areas

Anchor-frame agitators typically operate at low speeds and do not generate significant shear forces when mixing low-viscosity liquids, making them unsuitable for liquid-liquid and gas-liquid dispersion. On the other hand, these impellers generate high flow rates within the tank, dominated by horizontal circulatory flow, and do not provide good mixing uniformity. However, the flow velocity near the tank wall is higher than with other impellers, achieving a high heat transfer film coefficient. Therefore, they are commonly used for heat transfer and crystallization operations. Additionally, due to their large blade diameter and proximity to the tank bottom, they are often used to mix high-concentration slurries and settling slurries. They are also frequently employed for mixing high-viscosity fluids.

VI. Structure
The connection method of anchor-frame agitators to the agitator shaft is similar to that of paddle agitators. The end of the impeller connected to the agitator shaft is made into a semi-circular collar, and the two semi-circular rings on both sides of the blades are clamped onto the agitator shaft with bolts, while through-shaft bolts secure the blades to the agitator shaft. Due to the large outer dimensions of the impeller, blades are mostly bolted together for easy assembly and disassembly, with only small-sized ones cast or welded. Impellers are mostly made of flat steel or angle steel. To enhance the strength of the impeller, reinforced steel plates may also be used.
