Aluminum alloy readily absorbs gases, which is a primary characteristic of cast aluminum alloys. Hydrogen gas, produced by reactions between the components of molten aluminum and its alloys with moisture from furnace charges, combustion products of organic materials, and molds, is absorbed by the molten aluminum.

The higher the temperature of the molten aluminum alloy, the more hydrogen it absorbs. At 700°C, the solubility of hydrogen in every 100g of aluminum is 0.5–0.9 mL. When the temperature rises to 850°C, the solubility of hydrogen increases by 2–3 times. The presence of alkali metal impurities significantly increases the solubility of hydrogen in molten aluminum.

In addition to gas absorption during melting, cast aluminum alloys also absorb gas when poured into molds. As the molten metal in the mold cools, the solubility of gases decreases, causing excess gas to precipitate. Some of the gas that cannot escape remains in the casting, forming pores, commonly referred to as "pinholes." Sometimes, gas combines with shrinkage cavities, and the gas precipitated from the molten aluminum remains within the shrinkage cavities. If the pressure generated by the heated gas bubbles is high, the pore surfaces will be smooth, surrounded by a bright layer. If the gas bubble pressure is low, the pore surfaces will be wrinkled, resembling "fly legs," and upon closer inspection, they exhibit characteristics of shrinkage cavities. The higher the hydrogen content in the molten aluminum alloy, the more pinholes form in the castings. Pinholes in aluminum castings not only reduce the air tightness and corrosion resistance of the castings but also diminish the mechanical properties of the alloy. The key to obtaining aluminum castings with few or no pores lies in the melting conditions. Using covering agents during melting significantly reduces gas absorption. Refining the molten aluminum effectively controls the hydrogen content.
