Workflow

General process: A high-pressure infusion pump delivers the mobile phase at a stable flow rate (or pressure) to the analytical system. The sample is introduced via an injector before the chromatographic column, and the mobile phase carries the sample into the column, where components are separated and sequentially flow to the detector. In suppressed ion chromatography, a suppression system is added before the conductivity detector, where another high-pressure pump delivers regenerant to the suppressor. In the suppressor, the background conductivity of the mobile phase is reduced, and the effluent is directed to the conductivity cell. The detected signal is sent to the data processing system for recording, processing, or storage. Non-suppressed ion chromatography does not use a suppressor or a high-pressure pump for regenerant delivery, making the instrument structure relatively simpler and more affordable.
