Mass Spectrometry Vacuum Leak Detection and Tuning

Mass spectrometer tuning is essential for obtaining high-quality mass spectrometry data. Before conducting sample experiments, vacuum leak detection and tuning of the mass spectrometer must be performed. Tuning should be done after powering on/off, replacing filaments, and cleaning the ion source. If the instrument remains powered on continuously, tuning is generally required every two weeks.

If the air/water concentration does not meet the requirements of H2O &lt;20%, N2 &lt;10%, and N2/O2 ≠ 4:1, first consider whether the system has a leak, including the gas path system, sample inlet, column connections at both ends, and the vacuum chamber. Next, check the gas source to see if a gas cylinder has been replaced recently, which may have exposed the pipeline to air during the changeover. Increase the split ratio and purge for 10 minutes before retuning. If the air/water concentration still does not meet the requirements, check if the carrier gas filter has reached saturation. If the filter is functioning normally, the issue may be due to impure gas sources. In this case, replace the gas source with one of purity greater than 99.999%.
