Experimental Principle

The testing principle for the tensile strength of plastic film involves applying a gradually increasing tensile load along the length direction of a standard plastic specimen, causing deformation until failure. The maximum tensile stress required for the specimen to break is the tensile strength. The change in the stretched length of the specimen is expressed as the elongation at break. By selecting appropriate stress and strain on the linear segment of the stress-strain curve before the yield point, the elastic modulus of the plastic film can be calculated.

Experimental Procedure for Plastic Film Tensile Strength Testing

1. Measure the thickness of the specimen using a gauge with flat upper and lower surfaces as specified in GB 6672. Measure the width of the specimen using a gauge with an accuracy of 0.1 mm or higher. For each specimen, measure the thickness and width at three points within the gauge length and take the arithmetic mean.

2. Place the specimen between the two clamps of the testing machine, ensuring that the longitudinal axis of the specimen aligns with the centerline of the upper and lower clamps. The clamping should be appropriately tight to prevent the specimen from slipping or breaking within the clamps. The clamps should be lined with elastic materials such as rubber.

3. If using an extensometer, adjust the two measurement points of the extensometer to align with the gauge length of the specimen before applying stress. The extensometer should not impose any load on the specimen.

4. Start the testing machine and conduct the test at the specified speed.

5. After the specimen breaks, record the required load and the corresponding elongation between the gauge marks. If the specimen breaks outside the gauge marks, discard it and repeat the test with a new specimen.
