Geocell is a three-dimensional mesh cell structure formed by welding reinforced HDPE sheet material. It is generally produced through ultrasonic pin welding. Depending on engineering requirements, some membranes are perforated.

Features: 1. Flexible expansion and contraction; it can be folded during transportation and stretched into a mesh during construction. It is filled with loose materials such as soil, gravel, and concrete to form a structure with strong lateral confinement and high rigidity.

2. Lightweight, wear-resistant, chemically stable, resistant to light and oxygen aging, and resistant to acids and alkalis. It is suitable for various soil conditions, including deserts.

Engineering Applications:

1. Treatment of Semi-Fill and Semi-Cut Subgrades

When constructing embankments on slopes with a natural gradient steeper than 1:5, the base of the embankment should be stepped, with a step width of no less than 1 meter. For phased construction or road widening, steps should be excavated at the junction of new and old subgrade fill slopes. For high-grade roads, the step width is generally 2 meters. Geocells are laid on the horizontal surface of each step, utilizing their vertical lateral confinement and reinforcement effect to better address uneven settlement issues.

2. Subgrades in Wind-Blown Sand Areas

Subgrades in wind-blown sand areas should primarily consist of low embankments, with a fill height generally no less than 0.3 meters. Due to the requirements for low embankments and heavy loads in these areas, geocells provide lateral confinement to loose fill materials, ensuring high rigidity and strength within a limited height to withstand the stress from heavy vehicles.

3. Reinforced Backfill Behind Abutments

Geocells can better achieve the goal of reinforcing backfill behind abutments. The friction between geocells and fill materials effectively reduces uneven settlement between the subgrade and structures, ultimately mitigating early damage to the bridge deck caused by "abutment bump."

4. Subgrades in Permafrost Regions

When constructing fill subgrades in permafrost regions, the minimum fill height should be achieved to prevent frost boil or a drop in the permafrost upper limit, which could lead to excessive settlement. The unique vertical reinforcement effect and overall lateral confinement of geocells ensure the minimum fill height in certain special areas, providing the fill with high strength and rigidity.

5. Treatment of Collapsible Loess Subgrades

For high-speed and first-class roads passing through collapsible loess or highly compressible loess areas, or when the allowable bearing capacity of the foundation for high embankments is lower than the pressure from vehicle loads and the embankment's self-weight, the subgrade must be treated to meet bearing capacity requirements. In such cases, the superiority of geocells becomes evident.

6. Saline Soil and Expansive Soil

For high-speed and first-class roads constructed using saline or expansive soil, the shoulders and slopes require reinforcement. The vertical reinforcement effect of geocells is unique among all reinforcement materials, and its excellent corrosion resistance meets the requirements for constructing high-grade roads in saline and expansive soil areas.
