Laser cladding and laser alloying both utilize high-energy density laser beams to create rapid melting processes on the substrate and its surface, forming alloy coatings with entirely different compositions and properties.

I. The two processes of laser cladding and laser alloying are similar but fundamentally different. The main differences are as follows:

1. In laser cladding, the cladding material is completely melted, while the substrate melting layer is extremely thin, thus having minimal impact on the composition of the cladding layer. In contrast, laser alloying involves adding alloying elements to the surface fusion layer of the substrate, aiming to form a new alloy layer based on the substrate.

2. Essentially, laser cladding does not use the molten metal on the substrate surface as a solvent. Instead, it melts separately configured alloy powder to form the main alloy of the cladding layer, while a thin layer of the substrate alloy also melts to achieve a metallurgical bond with it.

The preparation of new materials using laser cladding technology is a critical foundation for the repair, remanufacturing of failed parts under extreme conditions, and the direct manufacturing of metal components. It has garnered significant attention from the scientific community and industries worldwide.
