Working Principle of Nimbus Early Streamer Emission (ESE) Lightning Rod

Due to the rise of large amounts of water vapor, charged clouds form at high altitudes. During a storm, a strong electric field (thousands of V/m) develops between the ground and the clouds. The ESE electronic triggering device has a system capable of storing some of this energy.

When the thundercloud begins its downward leader discharge, the number of electric ions in the field rapidly increases. The internal electronic system captures ions from the air and uses the previously stored energy to raise the voltage, releasing the buffering process. This causes the central part of the lightning rod to rapidly ionize the surrounding air and extend, generating an upward leader discharge and forming a discharge path.

The upward leader discharge produced and the downward leader discharge form a continuous discharge channel that meets the charged cloud, initiating the main discharge and diverting the lightning to the ground. The built-in electronic triggering system of the lightning rod rapidly increases the number of ions, allowing the upward leader to intercept the downward leader from the charged cloud hundreds of meters away from the rod. This results in a significantly larger protection radius for the lightning rod.
