Formic acid (English: Formic acid), also known as methanoic acid, has the chemical formula HCOOH. It is found in the secretions of hymenopteran insects such as ants and bees. The name originates from its initial production through the distillation of ants. Formic acid is a colorless, pungent-smelling, and corrosive substance. Contact with human skin can cause blistering and redness. It has a melting point of 8.4°C and a boiling point of 100.8°C. Due to its unique structure, with one hydrogen atom directly bonded to the carboxyl group, it can also be considered a hydroxyformaldehyde. As a result, formic acid exhibits both acidic and aldehyde properties. In the chemical industry, it is used in the production of rubber, pharmaceuticals, dyes, and leather, among other industries.
