Applications
Due to its high thermal stability and resistance to acids and bases, it is an excellent solvent. It can be used to extract aromatic hydrocarbons from aliphatic hydrocarbons and remove acidic gases from gas mixtures. Sulfolane can serve as a solvent for high molecular compounds such as polyacrylonitrile, acrylonitrile copolymers, polyvinyl fluoride, etc., used in spinning and film manufacturing. It can also be used as a plasticizer for cellulose ethers, polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyamide, etc., and as an additive in acrylic fiber spinning. Additionally, it can be applied in the separation of fatty acids and the extraction of non-cellulosic components from wood. Owing to its high boiling point, excellent thermal stability, and non-corrosiveness, sulfolane can be used as a condenser carrier. When added to compressor oil, it improves properties such as corrosion resistance, flame retardancy, thermal stability, and viscosity.
