【Properties】Chemical formula NaNO3, relative molecular mass 85.01, melting point 306.8°C, density 2.257 g/cm3 (at 20°C). Appears as colorless transparent or slightly yellow rhombic crystals. Tastes bitter and salty, highly soluble in water and liquid ammonia, slightly soluble in glycerol and ethanol. Hygroscopic, especially when containing trace sodium chloride impurities. Decomposes into nitrite and oxygen when heated. Supports combustion, must be stored in a cool, ventilated place.
【Applications】Strong oxidizing agent; used in manufacturing nitric acid, dyes, pharmaceuticals; soil and fertilizer analysis.
