Differences and Connections Between APF and bbb

Difference: bbb is a static reactive power compensation device used to improve the system power factor; whereas APF (Active Power Filter, all currently available active filters on the market are parallel-connected) is a harmonic compensation device used to eliminate harmonics in the system. This is the most important distinction between the two.

Connection Between APF and bbb:

APF and bbb can be used together, compensating for reactive power while also suppressing harmonic currents in the system.

Simply put: APF primarily functions for filtering. bbb is mainly for reactive power compensation. If harmonics are present, bbb requires a filter. The advantage of bbb is that it can handle larger capacities. APF typically comes in 50A, 100A, 150A, etc. APF has higher system requirements. If capacitors are already present in your system, APF is more prone to damage (this is absolutely based on experience). However, the system may still require reactive power, necessitating precise calculations and simulations.

Active power filters are used to manage harmonics, so their role is to filter out harmonics. Why manage harmonics? Because harmonics are harmful.

Types of Harmonic Hazards:

a. Overheating of cables, motors, and transformers, reducing their service life or causing damage;

b. Damaging sensitive equipment, leading to production or experimental interruptions and significant losses;

c. Causing circuit breakers to malfunction, resulting in regional outages;

d. Overloading capacitors or causing them to fail;

e. Generating high currents in the neutral line, leading to system failures;

f. Triggering grid resonance;

g. Reducing power supply efficiency due to harmonics in the grid;

h. If harmonic pollution levels are too high, approval for grid connection may be denied by the power supply department;
