The principle of a dust particle counter is based on light scattering technology. It uses a laser beam to pass through airborne particles, which scatter some of the light. During operation, an air sample is drawn in by a pump, and the particles in the sample are categorized into different size ranges. Typically, the counter classifies particles into two ranges: larger than 0.3 micrometers and larger than 5.0 micrometers.
