As a chain transfer agent: In free-radical polymerization reactions (such as the polymerization of monomers like styrene, acrylonitrile, and vinyl chloride), it controls the molecular weight of the polymer through the chain transfer effect of the thiol group, regulates the viscosity and molecular weight distribution of the product, and makes the polymer molecular weight more uniform. For example, in the synthesis of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), adding n-Dodecanethiol can reduce the molecular weight of the rubber and improve its processing performance.

Metal Surface Treatment

Used as a metal corrosion inhibitor: The thiol group can adsorb onto the surface of metals (such as copper and silver) to form a protective film, preventing the metal from being corroded or oxidized. It is often used in metalworking fluids and rust inhibitors.

Preparation of Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAMs): On the surfaces of precious metals like gold and silver, dodecanethiol spontaneously assembles into an ordered monolayer through Au-S bonds, used for modifying electrodes, sensor surfaces, or preparing superhydrophobic materials.
