Chemical Analysis and Laboratory

As a protein precipitant: In biochemistry, trichloroacetic acid can denature and precipitate proteins (the principle involves disrupting hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions of proteins). It is commonly used for the separation and purification of proteins or for removing protein impurities from samples.

As a strong acid catalyst: Because its acidity is stronger than sulfuric acid, it can be used to catalyze certain organic synthesis reactions (such as esterification and condensation), and is particularly suitable for water-sensitive systems.

Pharmaceuticals and Dermatology

Topical caustic agent: Low concentration (10%~30%) solutions can be used to treat skin hyperplastic diseases such as warts, corns, and seborrheic keratosis by corroding the lesion tissue to cause necrosis and shedding; high concentrations (50%~100%) can be used to cauterize the wart body or the root of the wart to remove necrotic tissue.

Chemical peeling agent: In medical aesthetics, diluted trichloroacetic acid solutions can be used for chemical peels to remove aging keratin from the skin surface and improve issues such as dark spots and wrinkles (concentration must be strictly controlled to avoid excessive skin damage).

Organic synthesis intermediate: Used in the preparation of trichloroacetates, dyes, pesticides, etc. For example, derivatives of trichloroacetic acid can serve as raw materials for herbicides or insecticides.

Metal surface treatment: Utilizing its strong acidity and corrosiveness, it can be used for cleaning, derusting, or etching metal surfaces; however, due to its excessive corrosiveness, its scope of application is relatively narrow.

Used in wastewater treatment: It can adjust the pH value of wastewater, or be used in combination with other reagents to remove heavy metal ions from wastewater (through precipitation or complexation).
