Main Uses

Organic Synthesis Intermediate:

The core use is the preparation of ethylene glycol (an important polyester raw material used in the production of polyester fibers, antifreeze, etc.) via reduction reactions. Especially in the "coal-to-ethylene glycol" process, dimethyl oxalate is a key intermediate, resolving the reliance on traditional petroleum routes.

Used to synthesize other esters and amides, and further prepare pharmaceutical and pesticide intermediates (such as precursors for certain antibiotics and herbicides).

Solvent and Plasticizer: Due to its good solubility for organic substances, it can serve as a special solvent in industries such as coatings and inks; it can also be used as a raw material for plasticizers to improve the flexibility of plastics (though application is limited due to higher costs).

Analytical Chemistry Reagent: Used in laboratories for instrument calibration (e.g., gas chromatography) or as a standard substance, and also as a control sample for organic synthesis reactions.
